Rudolf Hertz

 

Rudolf Hertz was born in Düsseldorf in 1897.

He studied Comparative Linguistics and Celtic Studies in Munich and Bonn and specialised in Celtic Studies, under the tuition of Rudolf Thurneysen . For his PhD he completed a thesis on Die Zeit- und Begründungskonjunktionen des Irischen, which was published in two volumes of the Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie (Vol. XVIII [1929] and Vol. XIX [1933]) entitled Beiträge zur Syntax der irischen Begründungssätze. His habilitation paper was entitled Beiträge zur Formengebung und Geschichte des altirischen nasalierenden Relativsatzes in Bonn in 1930.

Hertz was forced to surrender his teaching position in Bonn leave Germany between 1938 and 1945. He returned to Germany in 1946 and became Visiting Professor at Mainz University and later worked as a lecturer of German at the National University Dublin. 1953 he succeeded Professor Thurneysen to his post at Bonn University.

Rudolf Hertz died in 1965.
